Dedicated Train Service
BNSF's Dedicated Train service is the most efficient and economical way to move high-volumes of single commodities from a
single origin to a single destination. Through this service, you can access the most efficient and fluid rail network in
North America.
Excellent for large quantities of single-bulk commodities such as coal, grain, minerals, liquids, special project cargo and oversized
commodities (i.e., wind blades)
Non-stop service between a single origin and destination
Enhances value of facility and equipment investments
BNSF offers three types of Dedicated Train Services - Coal Unit Train, Shuttle Train, and Other Unit Trains.
COAL UNIT TRAIN SPECIFICATIONS
- Train lengths vary by route, but generally range from 115 to 150 cars
- Customers generally supply their own equipment
- Non-stop service between a single origin and destination
- Does not use dedicated locomotives
Grain Unit Train
BNSF offers two types of dedicated train service for grain shipments: Shuttle Trains and Destination Efficiency Trains (DET).
SHUTTLE TRAIN SPECIFICATIONS
- Grain shuttle facilities must meet specific Design Guidelines to qualify for shuttle rates. You can also contact an Ag Products Economic
Development representative and they can provide you with the Facilities Design Guidelines

DESTINATION EFFICIENCY TRAIN (DET) SPECIFICATIONS
- 110-car train consisting of four monthly or year-long Certificate of Transportation (COT)units
- All COT Units combined to create a DET must have the same shipping period
- A DET may be split enroute for unloading at multiple destinations
- Dedicated locomotives
- Loads in 24 hours

OTHER UNIT TRAIN SPECIFICATIONS
- Excellent for project cargo, industrial bulk and oversized shipments – including lumber, steel, wind blades, pipe, etc.
- Train lengths vary by commodity and route
- Can be used for single car shipments with urgent deliver or handling requirements
- Non-stop service between a single origin and destination
- Requires facilities capable of handing train service
